SC6 Blows a Kiss Goodbye to His Friend, Lo-Lo

I almost don't know how to begin this post, except to say that this is one of the sadder days in my life. For those of you who read the blog regularly, I made a vague reference to a sick friend, along with Moye Graham's mom, a few weeks back. My friend was Lois Wieber, or as everyone called her, Lo-Lo. Moye's mom seems to be recovering nicely, but things were much worse for Lois, who passed away this morning from Breast Cancer. She was only 40.

Yes, I've lost loved ones before, and some of them were very young, but most of them were in accidents, doing things they loved, or were sick for so long that death seemed almost welcome. This picture of us was from no more than four months ago. In that short a time, she developed a tumor so aggressive, it was the size of a grapefruit just a couple weeks ago. The idea of someone passing away so fast and so young seems incomprehensible right now. None of us were prepared for this, or believed the diagnosis of her only having weeks left, but they were correct. Right now, I'm waiting for Lo-Lo to call me, tell me this was a big joke, and ask where we're going out this weekend...

Enough about her illness. I'd much rather give you an idea of who Lois was. Lo-Lo was your typical Brentwood, Long Island girl - tough, foul mouthed at times, frisky, funloving, but deep down, she would do anything for you. Lois was one of the biggest fans of my band in the 90's, and I used to dedicate Pearl Jam's 'Black' to her everytime. Most of all, she was a HUGE sports fan. Not just the type that looked good in a jersey - she knew more about the teams and players than you did. Want to start an argument with her? Just say how much the Dolphins , Mets or Rangers sucked.... Here's proof:

My neighborhood was very tight-knit..... everyone knew everyone, or at least knew their brother or sister. Lo-Lo was a year younger than me, and she lived about 4-5 blocks away. It was actually after school that we really became friends. When I had a keg party at my house with my beach friends who weren't from in town, she was the only girl from the neighborhood to show up. If she saw there was a party, she was coming - it didn't matter if she knew anyone, she MADE friends. Right before I moved to South Carolina, Lois was one of the best friends I had, and honestly, she was probably the one that got away. The time when we both were single never came around, and she was the lucky one for it! I've thought a lot the past few weeks how hard this must be for her husband, Shawn. I can't imagine it, and all of us are praying for him to be strong...




Lois' loss has made a huge impression in our circle of friends. She was one of the most popular people around - the Alpha Female among a pack of Alpha Females. It's shown all of us that we're getting older, and that we're all human. All the women made appointments with the OB/GYN's, and even the guys are having checkups. Perhaps that is the most important point I can make here today. Women, have your breasts checked, and don't wait if there's a lump. Guys, don't be tough and say you'll 'tough it out' - go see a doctor.






As for me, this experience has made me realize how unimportant politics is, and how much time I've wasted playing the game. I've taken a lot of petty crap from people that I really don't care about. My time of blogging may be nearing it's end, and the time to find happiness and fun in real life may be here again. None of us knows when our time will come, and this year has opened my eyes to it. Smile. Have Fun. Enjoy Life, and tell the people you love that you love them - don't wait.

We Actually Get to Handicap a Race in the 6th District .....

We Didn't Want to Do a Flying Pig Again, So......

Welcome to the best place in the world for analysis of the upcoming Republican Primary for the 6th Congressional District of South Carolina, also known as the Kingdom of James, aka Whipper Alley. If there is anyone who knows about running in the 6th, and working for the party in the 6th, it's me - not that you care. No, the person who likely will come out of the possible runoff won't have much left to take on Jim Clyburn, but it doesn't really matter anyway. How little chance does the winner have? The SCGOP announced a $365 fundraising drive to take back the seat held by John Spratt, but Clyburn wasn't even mentioned. At least they did put him on the T-shirt.....

I had been dreading and kicking back and forth the possibility of both a Republican challenger, and no challenger at all. We almost got it right. Earlier this week, most of us had been getting a bit squirrely over Nancy Harrelson running again unopposed. If it were me, I mostly likely would have passed if I would be solely blamed (justified of not) for any GOP losses from a Clyburn push in November. With multiple candidates, at least you can split the blame, and it should interesting. God knows me and Gary McLeod sure was... Problem is, we got three, instead of two - but it's better than the nine nutjobs in the 1st who want to run.... With that in mind, we offer our unequalled analysis of the race, which ain't easy, considering none of the three went around the district to build a base.

Nancy Harrelson

By virtue of her candidacy in 2008, Nancy has the most name recognition. That is good, and that is bad - say 'Gary McLeod' at a county GOP meeting in the 6th, and see what happens..... Without a doubt, this is Nancy's last stab at running, lest she ends up with the 'perennial candidate' label. Three races in three years is a lot, and the last one was pretty embarrassing. Anytime you lose after being the only candidate on the ballot, the stigma kinda sticks. As far as November goes, Harrelson says she has a plan: she got 94,000 votes in 2008, but it was still only 33%, which is the same as McLeod got in 2006, 2004, 2002....... No doubt she got a lot of votes for having an 'R' after her name, but some of us felt she was too mechanical and not really supporting ideas that she genuinely believed in, like the Fair Tax.

I've heard whispers about the strategy, but here are the facts: the 6th is 53% black, and they go 95% Democrat, so there is 50% right there. The whites go 2-1 Republican, so there is the 33% you get. Even if the planets realign, the Earth shifts, the sun stops shining, and you get 20% of the black vote, you are only at 43%. It cannot be done.... But, that doesn't apply for the Primary, so Nancy has a chance for the nomination.

Colleen Payne

I don't want to be dismissive of Colleen. After all, she did contact me from Columbia on Facebook about running, which I appreciated. I laid it all out for her, told her what she would have to do and have, and that a part time non-trad college student has no time to run for Congress. I guess she didn't listen, and I hope she doesn't miss the $3500 come tuition time in the Fall. It's not the first time a candidate ignore my good advice - but the smart ones usually do. However, I do understand the need to run just once. I never expected to win, I was hoping to get to 40%, and maybe get the state party to put some kind of effort into the race. The fact is, if a person wants to run, and has the money to get their name on the ballot, they will do it.

Jim Pratt

Pratt is the intriguing one in the race, possibly because I haven't spoken to or met him. From conversations I've had with others, the Orangeburg resident has some advantages over the other candidates. He is centrally located in the 6th, he has money to burn and access to billboards, which makes getting name recognition much easier. Also, he's a man, which is better because we all know men make better candidates. KIDDING !!! I just love to drive the people who think that the GOP doesn't want women in office crazy!

Seriously though, I have heard that Pratt claims he has the Tea Party support. This could be good, and it could be disastrous. If by Tea Party, he means fiscal conservative, great. If by Tea Party, he means the 9-11 conspiracists, Obama Birthers and other fringe kooks that sometimes make it on July 4th and April 15th, then we have a problem. Being the only male, he will need to be prepared to be called a racist, which Payne and Harrelson will not have to worry about. Still, he appears to have the major components that the other two lack. Cash talks where mere words cannot.

As a former 6th District candidate, and current Vice-Chair, my job is to both support any candidate interested, and to advise her/him on what to expect. Harrelson, Payne and Pratt should all be prepared to go down in flames come November - and take a lot of heat if any Republican candidate loses a tight race in the area, like Rose Mary Parham. It comes with the territory. But, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have a candidate. My hope is that someone will finally get on the same stage as The Whipper, make sense to the voters, and hand him his ass for just one day, like I did in 2005 at Florence-Darlington Tech. I'll be glad to help.... Big Daddy needs a new roof, so just drop me a couple thou, and I'll write all the nice posts you want. Why not? Everyone else does......

No, we didn't do great either, but 11-5 is better than most from what we've heard. Purdue and St. Mary's are killing us right now...That puts us at a healthy 35-13 overall, but we need some major help to tie last year's 49-14. Dueling Solicitor Candidates On Monday....

Rose Mary Parham and Ed Clements to Announce On the Same Day ......

Here at SC6, we like things easy... We hate to have to keep our crib notes around while going through all the candidates to see what their differences are, and who we should vote for. So, when things like Monday's double announcement for 12th District Solicitor come up, we have to applaud the candidates for making our lives easier - and isn't that what life's all about?

We do have an interesting race between Republican candidate and former Assistant Deputy US Attorney Rose Mary Parham and Democrat incumbent Ed Clements III. We heard about Parham's candidacy, which has Florence and Marion County Republicans all jazzed up about fielding a candidate in a race that they've let go unchallenged lately. It was a bit hard posting any info for Parham from the little info we could get on her Facebook page, but we did piece together her work with the US Attorney's office and her handling of the recent Timothy Poole conviction from links provided.

Clements has served 2 terms we think in the 12th Solicitors Office, and we found out later that he will be announcing his campaign for re-election Monday as well. P-Luv has a post on Clements at http://www.behindthepine.blogspot.com/, and we're SURE he'll make a pitch for Clements here. Hopefully, we'll have some friends of Parham do the same. As for us, Solicitor campaigns just aren't that sexy to us. We'd like to think that a person charged with prosecuting criminals would do it similarly based on the rule of law, whether he/she has a R or a D hyphenated after their name. Meanwhile, we're glad to see that Parham and Clements are making that decision a bit easier by doing it together. Let's hope the media shows up and reports it, so voters actually CAN decide....

The Avalon Is Stylin' and Ready For the Trip Home .....

Hope you're enjoying your Sunday morning. We're starting our preparation for the trip to South Carolina on Thursday, much like OJ Simpson goes into 'Rush Mode' when he packs for killing his wife..... I mean, taking the Red Eye to Chicago. The best thing this week was the weather. Spring has finally sprung here in Long Island. Sunny and highs in the mid-60's all week. Unfortunately, it's gonna drop a bit tomorrow. So, what do you do when it gets nice out? You wash your car.....

Seriously, the last time I washed my car at home was October. That's why car washes never go out of business here - you can't wash your car for six months out of the year, so you pay $18 to have a Mexican do it for you... Anyway, here are my latest musings: It's not 100% concrete yet, but my intinerary is this.....

Thursday: Drive 4AM- 3PM. Cat nap. 5-6:00PM Florence County GOP Meeting. 6-8:00PM Ken Ard fundraiser. 8:00PM- ???? Creek Ratz.

Friday: Drop car at Toyota, work on yard all day. You name it, I'm doing it. Friday night - no idea, but something will come up.

Saturday: Day two of work, replacing storm door as well. Might go out shortly on Saturday night, but I doubt it....

Elsewhere, after blowing about $500 on new clothes, I finally got to go out last night with a couple friends, where an old lady with a face like a baseball mitt called me gay. Then she drove off in her SmartCar.... However, at Bar No. 2, I did get another girl's phone number without asking for it. She must like gay guys.... At the end, I got hungry and decided to get White Castles. Bad Idea - they don't call them Belly Bombers for nothing.....

Thursday's meeting in Flotown should be interesting for me. I spent all last week ticking people locally off for being right, to the point where even when I gave compliments, people misconstrued them. Such is life..... I see they are going elsewhere to get their news out on other blogs now, which is fine. My advice is don't believe everything you hear, and beware of the hand that feeds you....

So, the House is likely going to pass the Health Care bill today. I watched the coverage on Fox News Today, and it was a nice but cordial battle between two of the sharper young minds in the House: Debbie Wasserman-Schultz(D-FL), and Paul Ryan (R-WI). I feel bad for Wasserman-Schultz sometimes for having to peddle Nancy Pelosi's bullshit, but she did reasonably well, and was honest enough to admit that tax will go up to pay for it. Yeah, her mouth reminds me of a bass I once caught, but she overcame Cancer, so I'll cut her a little slack......

Question: since the House is voting on a Sunday, do we have to pay them double time???? The best line on Fox's panel was by Brit Hume 'The Democrats are obsessing about with Health Care over the Economy much like Captain Ahab.' Moby Dick, people - read sometimes, will ya - and not just blogs and TMZ.....

Lastly, there are a lot of events going on in SC politics soon, and we'll give you a rundown on what we know about soon. BTW, somehow our little blog that no one reads jumped up to Number Six on Blog Net News, when you take out the fact that Sunlit Uplands is on there twice. We're just behind Palmetto Scoop and ahead of Waldo Lydecker's Journal - all heavyweights whether you like them or not. This is why we need Term Limits. I haven't watched a single basketball game all year, and I went 24-8 in my NCAA Tourney Picks. While I didn't get Cornell, Murray State, St. Mary's or Ohio, I did do a good job with the close picks like Washington, Missouri, Old Dominion and Wake Forest. There was a definite trend region-wise. If it weren't for Cornell and Murray State, I would have been perfect in the East and West. Meanwhile, I only went 5-3 in the South and Midwest. It's Turning Into 1994 Again .... And We Like It !!

Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots Release New Albums .....

What was old becomes new again, right? Life is not just a box of chocolates, Forrest - it's a cycle. Things come, things go, and then the come back again. Whether it's politics, fashion or music, what was once in will inevitably come back - except for Jamz pants, we hope. For Grunge/Alt Rock fans like us, it couldn't come back fast enough.....

For fans of SC6, you know two of my favorite bands are Alice in Chains and STP. The Snake took away a major chunk of both bands for quite awhile there, but both seem to be back - and totally kicking ass... Alice in Chains has a new album, and after mourning Layne Staley's passing, Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney found William Duvall, and he's a nice fit. The new album is familiar enough to not alienate diehard AIC fans (after all, Cantrell is the main songwriter), but Duvall does sound just slightly different enough from Staley to not make you pin him as a ripoff.

Meanwhile, Stone Temple Pilots were one of the hardest to peg groups of the era. They could do it all, and they did. Unfortunately, vocalist Scott Weiland did a lot of Heroin for a while too, and it sidetracked a great band. During the offtime, Weiland had two kickass CD's with Velvet Revolver (who needs Axl Rose, right Slash?), and the DeLeo brothers started Army of Anyone with Filter singer Richard Patrick, to slightly less raves. What do you do when a broken up band gets it shit straight? You reform. My brother saw them in Charlotte last Summer, and he said it was probably the second best show he had ever been to. Well, they got in the studio, and a new album is due out soon, with the first single being released on Monday.....

On a much lesser note, we hate to see this, but Sublime is doing a shot tour of six shows as well. Singer Brad Nowell died from a Heroin OD (do we see a trend here?), and after 15 years, they hired a new singer, although there is no mentioning of an upcoming CD. To us, it sounds like a mini-tour to rake in a few extra bucks. Sad, but not sad enough to dampen our spirits over AIC and STP back on the road!! Now if only Toadies and Spacehog would get back together, then my mid-90's music habit would be back in full force. Hmmm, Grunge is back - could a Republican takeover of the House be far behind? I've Had My Fill Of Cancer This Week ....

A lot of you guys might think that I piss and moan all the time, but generally speaking, i'm a pretty happy guy - at least lately. Like the adage goes, 'If you think you have it bad, there's always someone who has it worse.' Most of the time, I have to look pretty far to find it. Unfortunately this week, it's all too easy to find examples....

For those of you who are tight in the Republican circles, or a fan of SC6, you know Moye. He's probably my tightest ally in the GOP. He worked for my campaign when almost no one would help, and I've always remembered. It also makes it easy when you see eye to eye on just about everything politically.... Moye has had a very tough week as he helps his Mom battle Cervical Cancer. She's 90 I believe, and they ended up performing a hysterectomy to remove the tumor, but she had some serious complications that actually caused her heart to stop. She came back, but she is in Columbia in CCU. Our best wishes for a full recovery.....

The other one is a little closer distancewise, but close in friendship nonetheless. A very tight friend of mine has inoperable breast cancer that was so aggressive, what was unseeable two months ago is now larger than a grapefruit in her chest, lung and spinal column. The first opinion gave her 3 weeks to 3 months, but we're getting a second opinion to confirm the diagnosis. No one knew about this 48 hours ago, so to hear that you friend suddenly may not live thru April makes time and life more important, and more precious. By the way, she's only 40.... Yeah, i'm being very vague, because she wnats to keep everything as private as possible. None of you know her, and no one in NY reads the blog, so it should be okay.......

Like I said, I've had my fill of Cancer for one week. But, I finally found a topic that Democrats and Republicans can agree on - although it would probably segue into an ugly Health Care debate in the end. We'll just avoid that for a day. Everyone join me.... Cancer Sucks. Fuck Cancer.......

Finally, A Movie About Chicks Who Rock ..... Unless You Wait Two Weeks for the Miley Cyrus Movie.

Easy people, we're just kidding. Miley Cyrus DOES NOT Rock..... Jesus! But, before Miley or The Spice Girls or Vixen or The Go-Go's, there were The Runaways. Even before my time, five teenage girls out of L.A. decided to become the first all-girl rock group to be signed by a major label - and then I'm sure things fell apart. Five girls, 3-5 days a cycle during their peak hormonic period - you do the Math. I bet that 10% of 'Happy Time' was Pure Magic, though.......





Tomorrow, or today if you wait til breakfast to read us, The Runaways story hits the big screen, with Kristen (Twilight) Stewart playing Joan Jett,and Dakota (in every movie for the past ten years) Fanning starring as Cherie Currie. Not sure who plays Lita Ford, but she better be hot.... Generally, March isn't the time for Oscar-caliber movies, but we do get some surprises. We'll see on this one. Or, you can go see 'The Bounty Hunter' - or as I call it, 'The Breakup II', with Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler taking Vince Vaughn's place. Hell, they even dressed him like Vince. Ever write a movie specifically for a guy, only to find out he's not available??

Richardson to Announce For J'ville Mayor ....

Brad Says 'Thumbs Up' to Being Mayor of Johnsonville .....

They say all politics are local, which is true for the most part. What is definitely true is that local politics are much more fun and purist than bigger races. Congressional and Senate campaigns suck ...... I should know. But running for mayor of a small town is like it used to be - and still should be.

Correcting Our Alan Gratzer Moment ....

Sometimes, even we here at SC6 screw up. Not about anything political. We're still sharp as a tack in that regard, which we think we solidified this week. So, where did we err? Yesterday, we remembered Corey Haim in our Fuzzy Thoughts post, and we happened to mention Nicole Eggert in passing ...... and somehow, someway, we completely neglected posting a picture of her. P-Luv, we're sorry....

As he put it, 'I don't even know WHO you are, Reino'..... That automatically jogged our memory of the line from 'Employee of the Month' - 'You're like the drummer from REO Speedwagon, no on eeven knows who you are.' Naturally, since I am the King of Useless Knowledge, I already knew the drummer from REO, hence the Alan Gratzer Moment. Thought it might need an explanation.....

No, we don't examine things the same way as other bloggers do sometimes... Today was a perfect example. While everyone was talking about Barack Obama's road trip to make a final push on Health Care - with Jim Clyburn and John Spratt taking center stage in the push to add another billion dollars to the National Debt, we had another question: what the hell is it with Obama and Ohio?

Seriously, every time the shit hits the fan, Obama hops into Air Force One, and goes to Ohio. Need to talk Health Care? It's off to Ohio. Need to show a Stimulus initiative that produced 35 jobs? There's one in Columbus... Need to catch a game of hoops? Hey, let's rekindle that bromance with LeBron James in Cleveland. Okay, I made the last one up. Obama has an Ohio Jones like Bush 41 had for Kennebunkport, or Bush 43 had for Crawford. If he's looking for a spot to showcase how shitty things are, South Carolina is qualifying pretty well, don't you think? Oh yeah - Red State. Nevermind....

So, what is it about the state that's Hi in the Middle, and Round on both ends? Can only be one of two things: Obama's got a shorty there ............ or it the Buckeye Candy. Either way, he must be trying to get away from the wife for a bit - you can't be downing Chocolate-covered Peanut Butter when the Old Lady's in charge of skinnying America's kids up......

Mission Impossible Star Peter Graves Passes Away ...

Yes, it appears as though I did it again. Happens all the time, doesn't it? I blog about someone, or watch their movie or somehow indirectly cross paths with that person, and they die right afterwards. Today, we learned of the passing of Mission Impossible star, and Senior Citizen informercial putchman extraordinaire, Peter Graves. All together now ..... why couldn't it have been Tom Cruise instead? They got the wrong MI star......

In fact, just this weekend, I saw one of his ads, and I thought to myself that it's a wonder he's still kicking. In fact, he was only 83, but when you gray prematurely, you just seem older. I do feel slightly responsible, like it has happened so often before. No, I have more concrete proof than watching a commercial on cable with him: Remember the blog post about the kid's giving takeoff commands to the pilots at JFK? I ended it with Graves in an 'Airplane!!' clip. Eighty-three years, and I get him pegged within a week of his death. What are the odds? No, it still doesn't match Natasha Richardson's accidental death one day after I watched 'The Parent Trap' for the first time, but it's still creepy enough. If I were you, I'd run from me like I was the Grim Reaper come March 25th....

After I added the Airplane clip, I was going to do a post on Johnny , the slightly fruity airline employee in the Tower - he was absolutely the funniest guy in that movie, but I forgot. So instead I'll do it today. Don't worry, it can't do him any harm - he passed away years ago....

Fuzzy Thoughts .....The Happy Birthday Edition.

After 2 Days, The HSM Shit Finally Comes Down....

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. As you guys bask in the beautiful sunny South Carolina weather - and I dream about it for ten more days - the Sarah birthday extravaganza comes to an end. Family day was yesterday, the party for friends at the Gymboree was today. I know, two days to make a 7 year old feel special isn't asking too much, but the truth is, everyday is this kids day. She OWNS the house.. My favorite line? "I don't get anything I want", when she found out some family canceled attending - who she called 'my stupid cousins' two hours earlier...

And about that weather? Today, cloudy, with an occasional drop here and there. Yesterday was hellacious. About 40 for a high temp, 2.5 inches of rain, top recorded wind gust was 67 MPH.... Power lost to about 150,000 people, but not me. It pays to bury those utility wires, folks. Pathetic fact of the day: it's March 14th, and the Christmas Tree STILL hasn't been taken down. We took all the decorations off at least six weeks ago, but taking the top off requires two people, and Joe had been gone for the better part of three weeks.... Maybe today, maybe next week......

Despite the rain, the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Bay Shore still went on as planned, though most people stayed in the cars. I was supposed to meet someone this afternoon to celebrate, but my phone didn't ring, so I'm staying home...... Speaking of which, it hasn't stopped raining since I bought new clothes. Nothing like being ready to go out, and not being able to.....

In politics, I saw where everyone was worried that SC was the sleaziest state in the nation in politics. To the people of SC, I have this to say: I've been in SC, and I've been in NY. When it comes to sleaze, SC has a lot to learn still. In short, SC is no NY - feel better? When you dump two governors, a congressman, and have another lose his chairmanship in a year, then call back. For now, please accept Miss Congeniality with pride......

Focus, Daniel-San. Is it just me, or does James Carville need to visit the Democrats and remind them exactly what the main concern of Americans is? Ticklegate. I'm getting copyrights to the term as we speak, along with Tickle-Palooza and Tickle Me Massa..... For those of you who are on Facebook, we suggest that you become friends with Bubba Cromer and Craig V. Adams. Craig has a recurring segment where he asks you to write captions under a photo - and Bubba is just too fucking funny. I can't believe the guy was once a State Rep. He might just be my Role Model.....

Lastly, we pay homage to Corey Haim. For anyone paying attention to his life the past decade, we all kinda had a feeling this was coming. Drugs will always drag you down, and take everything you value in life: money, possessions, your dignity, your freedom, and those who you love. For Haim, I don't think he ever got over breaking up with Nicole Eggert - not that it's her fault. I never saw The Lost Boys, Lucas, License to Drive , or any of the Two Coreys Movies. To me, he was just a kid who got too much too early, and never grew up or embraced reality as the rest of us know it.....
