Where Is Gust Avrakatos When We Need Him ?
I don't talk about International issues very often. It's not my specialty, unless you're talking about the Ukraine, which I could tell you a lot about. Well, just down the street is Kyrzygstan (pronounced KIR-zig-stan). Like many Central Asian countries formerly under Soviet rule, Kyrzygstan is in a bit of a pickle. They want to be separate from Russia, but they are poor, and they just can't seem to let go of help from Moscow.
Need an example? There was a story I saw on Fox News yesterday. The scary part is , it wasn't even a real story, it was one of those little zipper stories at the bottom of the screen. It may not exciting or sexy enough to garner your interest today, but trust me, it means alot...
What happened? Kyrzygstan took a payoff from Russia of about $2 billion.... And what was part of the agreement? They have to close an Air Force Base that the US currently uses to supply troops in Afghanistan. It took me longer than I thought, but this was the best map I could find of Kyrzygstan.
No, it's not a great map. Where it says 'Asia', just look directly to the left. A quick skip over Tajikstan, and you're there in Afghanistan..
Now, what is the problem? This will make winning in Afghanistan - a nearly impossible task as it is - even harder. I rarely talked about this while we were in Iraq, but everyone complained that Iraq was another Vietnam. That was incorrect - Afghanistan is another Vietnam,if not worse. Vietnam was made of jungles that you can Napalm flat. Afghanistan is mostly mountainous terrain that you can't blow up. I'm not comfortable about going there.
Russia knows how bad Afghanistan can be. They went in with 130,000 troops and couldn't win. Of course, we helped. But I have no doubts that Vladimir Putin is more than happy to watch us make the same mistake. The guy was in the KGB when we were screwing with them. He's loving it. As part of it's new openness, the Obama Administration sat down with Russia to get their opinion on Afghanistan, which was a bit silly. It's like asking the Chicago Cubs on how to get to the World Series...
Yes, this may sound like a small blip on the World News ticker, but in time, this will be one of those points where we lost a step in the War on Terror - and lives will be lost..
