I hate to tell you this, but there is no such thing as an original musician. Everythign has been done at least once. Everyone sounds like someone else. So, when you hear a song, it's no surprise to think that you've heard it before. But, to have one well-known musician sue another one for ripping him/her off is pretty rare - but Joe Satriani has some pretty big cajones...
Satriani, perhaps one of the greatest guitar players around for the past 25 years, is suing rock heavyweights Coldplay for copyright infringement. Satriani thinks that Coldplay's recent hit "Viva la Vida" incorporates 'significant original portions' of Satriani's 2004 song, "If I Could Fly". I had never even heard the song, which has no lyrics, so there was only one thing to do.....
I employed the expertise of Rick, my co-worker. satriani and Coldplay are two of his favorite artists. We listened to both tracks, and as Rick said, "I don't hear it." I agreed. This isn;t like that Michael Bolton song that ripped off the Isley Brothers - they don't sound similar at all... But , we'll let you decide for yourself. Here are both songs. Make up your own mind and tell us - rip off, or not even close?

Damn shame. Time Machine was a late night staple in high school.
I checked out the clip - pretty good. It sounds like something from Pearl Jam;s 'Ten' album. Playing guitar and singing, i always hear lyrics or vocals for a song. Joe's an amazing guitarist, and his sound is unbelieveable.
You and your boy Rick have got to open up your ears a bit.
