Monster.Com Is Hiring, Wa Mu Is Firing.....

While so much of the news out there is bad, we try to focus on the positives, and still give everyone a dose of reality. Some call it the truth. We try.....

So, while we are in a recession, in the Pee Dee, there are still opportunities around. It's been no small secret that Washington Mutual was going to be slashing some jobs here after the news of their bad year. Well, it's finally coming. WaMu will be cutting about 500 jobs here in Florence over the next year, starting in February.

Before you decide to move to , say Michigan, let us give you some glimmer of hope for our area. Monster.com just broke ground on their new call center here on the same day as the WaMu layoff announcement. It will be adding about 750 new jobs here, so that's a net gain of 250 jobs. Granted there are Wellman jobs going as well, but Heinz is coming too. That is our point for today.....

What we are experiencing is nothing new at all in our economy. Businesses come, businesses go. The older companies that fail to adapt to change fall by the wayside, and they are replaced by the ones that keep up or are ahead of the curve. More companies will leave town at some point, and others will come in. Compared to some states, we are lucky - some haven't adapted yet.
