What Is 'Buying American' ?

SC6 Shows You How To Easily Pick a Car MADE In America...
Every other Saturday morning, when I'm not saving the world from dirty oil, squeaky brakes, slipping transmissions and leaky engines, I watch Fox Business AM. If you don't, you should once in a while. It's a no holds barred (if not argumentative) discussion from all sides of the economy, business and government. No, i don't know all of Lil' Wayne' songs - just the one - but I do know important stuff.... 'Bitch, i'm Da Bomb Like Click, Click'...
Today, one topic was should Americans be made to buy American cars? Ridiculous,yes.. Just try to make me buy a car that I don't want. You'd have similar luck getting guns out of Ted Nugent's hands... But, the funny part is that the Auto business is global, and The Big Three are losing overseas, and the others are winning here. Sounds like a simple solution, right? WRONG. You see, many foreign cars are made and their parts supplied in the US. So, what's a confused, unknowledgeable red blood American supposed to do? We're here to help, as usual....
Remember, no all foreign cars are made overseas, and not all american cars are made in the US - surprise!! But, if you really need to know, there is an easy way to tell how - the VIN number of the car. What is a VIN? It's short for vehicle identification number, and it is what separates your car from every other car. What most people don't know is that the VIN identifies where and when your car was made. Here's what to look for.
The VIN sticker is a white sticker, about 2x3 inches across, and it's right in the drivers door jamb. First off, the sticker always tells you what plant the car was made by the city and state. Easy enough, right? Well, some aren't always on there, so the surefire way to know what country your car was made is the VIN. Each country has a number or letter. Just look at the first number or letter, and it tells you. Here is the lowdown:
1,2,4,5 - United States or Canada
3 -Mexico
J - Japan
K- Korea
W- Germany
England? If you buy a British car, you deserve the punishment!
The rest of the number has meaning as well. It tells the manufacturer, model, plant and even the size engine. Pretty amazing, eh? So, that first number is really what you need to know. That Honda you are buying could be made in the US, Japan, or possibly even Mexico. That BMW could be from Germany, or from right here in South Carolina, that Hyundai from Korea or Alabama, or that Ford could be made in the US or Mexico. Check that VIN !!
Another important way to buy American is to check the parts content on the window sticker if you're buying a new car. It will list a percentage of parts by country, so you might have an American car with Canadian parts, or a Japanese car made in the US, but with Japanese parts.
Hopefully, this will help educate you, and enable you to make as well-informed a decision as possible. I'm not telling what to buy, I'm just giving the tools to buy the way you want to. After all, we're not Communists here.....
