Ed, Ed, Ed.... Mayor Hickory Head Takes Councilman Robinson To Task...

No, this isn't an accidental reprint from 2007.. or 2006.... or 2005. Florence Coity Councilman Ed Robinson was arrested this week - again. This makes it six times in the last five years for those of you keeping score. Compared to Ed, my one night in Effingham is nothing. Ed Robinson is twice the politician that I am..... actually, six times the politician.....

The big question everyone from put of town asks is "how does he stay in office?" It's simple. Everything that Ed has been thrown in the clink for is BS - as in pittypat offenses. This time, it was driving with a suspended license - again. That isn't really something you can kick a guy out of office - no matter how many times it happens. Governor Sanford can't pull him from office. Mayor Stephen Wukela can't either, but in an interview, he didn't seem to pull any punches on what needs to happen....

Old Wooden Head laid it right out - Robinson needs to be voted out by his constituents next time around. It's been pretty obvious that Robinson has slowed down the progress of the Downtown area, and in turn, hurting his own people. His absence would be an addition by subtraction, but he does have his supporters. They're the same 400 people who are convinced that he is their only voice, and that Ed is a victim ... of everyone.

Of course, that's silly. But he still manages to get elected each term. His time is coming around again soon. Will Wukela work to knock out Robinson, and to a lesser degree, Billy D. Williams ? Don't ask me, ask P-Luv...

Any of those offenses a felony?

Nope, Ed is misdemeanoring his way into the Hall of Shame, therefore he cannot be removed by Gov. Sanford or anyone else.

Mike--the sad thing is not that he keeps getting re-elected. The sad thing no one seems to able to put together the coalitions/voters and a winnable canidate to defeat. It has to say something about the quality and the character of people who live in Florence that they cannot keep defeat a complete incompetent. One has to really wonder who the incompetents really are.

In this case, the GOP is pretty powerless, as Ed's precincts are almost totally black. We've tried to find a sensible AA candidate to run, but she lost a few years back. They'll have to clean their own litter box in this case.

First...saying 400 is giving him too much credit. I think the "turnout" for their election last time was 300-something, but I could be wrong. I'm going off memory on that.

Anyway, that's a big reason why Ed and Billy opposed moving the city elections to line up with the nationals: it's harder to control the vote when turnout is high. Take a look at Billy's comments to Frank and the rest of them at the first meeting concerning non-partison elections. He told them he warned them about moving the elections, but they didn't listen and they lost.

In the past, those races have been decided off of just a few hundred votes of total turnout. From now on, that will not be the case. For those who think the black community of Florence fully support their current elected officials, simply look at Wukela's race. Every local black politician came out against Wukela and he walked the dog in both Ed and Billy's backyards. In the primary. That's no accident and that's why Wukela can say that change comes through the polls. Reino, you know...numbers don't lie.

Anyone who watched that special city council meeting from the church over at Levy Park (I think it was like the current council's second meeting) can tell Robinson knows he is in trouble. Several times that night, he made comments regarding if it was his time to go, so be it, etc.

As for Wukela's comments, they speak for themselves. Reino, I suppose you call him Wooden Head for a reason. You think he's gonna change his tune when those elections come around? Watch one of those council meetings on non-partisan elections. On some issues, there just ain't no flex. And there's no hiding about it either. His comments are the exact same they've been since he announced he was running.

Monday is a council meeting. Non-partisan has to come up again because it was deferred until this meeting (I am still wondering why the local Republican party doesn't oppose that BS? Seems like the kind of wimpycrap the Dems pull and you guys usually mock us for).

It would have been easy for Wukela to pull a Willis and not comment. (BTW, remember, last time he was arrested, Ed missed his court date b/c he was at Frank's PC announcing he was running again for reelection to show his support). But he stuck to his guns.

Listen, you know as well as I do the numbers are the numbers are the numbers. There is not a single member of city council other than the Mayor that was a serious, full-time Obama supporter for day one. And its the Obama folks that turned out. They are the same folks that worked for and backed Wukela. And they are the same folks who are staying involved and will run the Democratic party around the Pee Dee for the next couple of decades.

The dirty secret about those folks, are that they are true believers. That's right, as long as they bought into the fact that you were a true Democrat, they didn't care about money. How do you think those folks feel about the current Democrats? I think you'll see next election cycle.

yeah, 300 is about right. i added 100 in case there was someone out there that would take offense if I was slightly incorrect.

I call Stephen Old Wooden head because I thought that was your nickname for him. Did I get it wrong? If so, please correct me, because whatever it was, i thought it was hilarious..

Oh...that was Hickory head. A teacher at South Florence used to call us all that. I had forgotten I put that in one of my posts.

Thanks, it's now fixed !

I wonder if any Mayor of Florence had a head or is it a brain.

There was a time Maggie Glover thought she could lord it over her constituents in a district which included that area. Eventually, her luck ran out as her district realized her games were making her toxic, hence ineffective.

Sooner or later, even this joker's luck will likely run out.

Earl makes a very accurate comparison. Whether you like Obama or not, I can honestly say, you should respect what his campaign did to these self-professed gatekeepers: he shut them out.

All the usually faces who came to Obama's folks and said, we'll take care of it, just give us some money, got nothing. Not only did they get nothing, it told the Obama people who to avoid if they seriously wanted to show the people they were really trying to change things.

The people noticed. I can't tell you how big shutting these people out was. With Wukela, as far as those gatekeepers go, he doesn't need them and he has been telling them their days are numbered since he announced. That's why none of them supported him. His tune will not change.
