The Downside of Being Green: The Talking Heads' 'Nothing But Flowers'

'This Was a Parking Lot, Now It's a Tropical Rainforest'
Yeah, it's Wednesday, so I've got band practice again tonight. Hopefully, I'll play better than last week. So, i'm going lazy tonight, and posting a YouTube clip of a 1988 song that applies a bit with today's news..
Barack Obama is talking a lot about economic stimulus, with a focus on Green Technology. While it is a good idea maybe, you can always go too far with being green, and while everyone talks about going green, not everyone is willing to part with all the stuff...
Here is the song 'Nothing But Flowers' by the Talking Heads. It's basically about the world going so green that all the malls, restaurants, gas stations and movie theaters are grown over with plants, flowers and grass - and everyone missing it. It's a typical 80's video, with little messages flashed on the screen about nuclear power, global warming and other stuff. Pay attention to the lyrics, and you'll get the humor in it.....
All that aside, it's a fun song, with the salsa beat that eventually made David Byrne leave the band - and they still haven't talked. But, my brothe and best friend in New York said that David Byrne was the best concert they ever saw. And I got them free tickets to it. Personally, my best concert was Nickelback, Chevelle and Trapt at the Colonial Center three years ago....

That was a great video, but I think that the final straw that tore up the Talking Heads in addition to injecting world music themes into the bands repetoire was bringing Johnny Marr into the band is a featured guitarist after the recent breakup of "the smiths". That really pissed off the rest of the band. Byrne really wanted to take the band in a new direction because he saw the music industry changing and the rest of the band refused to follow his lead.

Byrne now has a succesful solo career that includes a record label, satellite music channel, pbs hosting gig, touring, etc. Where are Tina Yarmouth and the rest of the former Talking Heads.

By the way, I am very happy that you life is back on track and hope you have the happiest of Thanksgivings.

You know your music, Paul. Sounds like a spot-on assesment. Aside from the one hit as the Tom-Tom Club (which everyone samples), thye haven't done a whole lot. But they had a pretty great run anyway.
