When You're At the Top - Or Near It - There Is Only One Way to Go, Jim....

Our Crystal Ball Says The Whipper's Days Are Numbered..

Yesterday at work ,we got a phone call from out buddy and Four Horsemen member, Earl.  Aside from notifying us of his upcoming birthday bash, he passed on the news that our favorite congressman, and original muse for this blog, former House Majority Whip (we LOVE saying that!) Jim Clyburn, is slipping down the ladder a rung.  To us, with the impending news surrounding the rampant thievery at his top pork fund, SC State, we think Clyburn's tick down is just a small precursor to what will be happening soon.  Jim's heading for a mighty crash, and we're calling our shot...

First, the news of today: With the defeat of the Democrats in the November elections, there is a logjam in the Minority leadership.  House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is out of a gig, but she isn't bowing out gracefully. Nope, San Fran Nan likes being the Head Cheese (and all the perks that go with it), and she is running for Minority Leader. That left Clyburn and former Majority Leader Steny Hoyer going for Minority Whip.  Of course, knowing that Hoyer is a much more effective leader and coalition builder, Clyburn's days seemed numbered. But, you never count out The Whipper, and in true pimpmaster fashion, Sly Cly made Pelosi create a new gig, just for him, in exchange for Clyburn's blessing to the Congressional Black Caucus of support for Pelosi.  What's in it for me, as usual... From now on, it's Minority Assistant Leader Clyburn. Whatever....

However, those of you who think that this is just a small bump in Clyburn's road, think again.  Our advice to Jim is this: enjoy the view from the peak there, because it ain't going any higher.  Remember this post here today, because we're going to be able to say "I told you so" before you know it.... Clyburn is heading for a steep, rapid fall, and soon.  Why? Simple.  The James E. Clyburn Transportation School at SC State (his alma mater), which got somewhere in the neighborhood of $63 million federal dollars from what we remember, is under high scrutiny as to exactly where all the money is for the project... Word is that roughly HALF of the money is unaccounted for. Add to that the fact that the school has gone through president like you and I go through underwear the past few years, and there is the distinct smell of embezzlement....

But, where is Jim in all this? At this point , we don't know, and it's not really our job to figure it out.  Here's what we see however: Clyburn worked the Federal Government to get all this money for his alma mater, whose educational reputation is right up there with Sister Anita Maria's School of Needlepoint, to develop the blueprint for America's transportation needs for the 21st Century .... and he did this out of the kindness of his heart?  C'mon.  Is the possibility that a political pimp like Clyburn - whose sole aim is to 'get what is ours' and also 'got what is his' a bit more than probable?

We all know of Clyburn's hypocrisy: the preacher's son who quotes bible verses all day, then sneaks off to his office to down some JD and Diet Cokes... Most congressmen say their doing it for their constituents, but most of us know better.  Clyburn is too old, and not really skilled enough to go into the private sector at this point.  The likelihood that he is cashing out under SC State's table is a real possibility. If proven, jumping off a cliff will be slower than the fall The Whipper takes....

We'll mark it on the board right now: this will be Jim Clyburn's last term in Congress.  He lost his gig. Next, as the man who developed Barack Obama's policies (ones that have made his being re-elected almost impossible), he will now lose the President's ear, and reside at the 'Leader in Absentia' slot.  If the money trail leads anywhere near him with SC State, it is all over.... We'll see.

So now Obama's re-election is impossible, huh? And which mighty candidate, pray tell, are the Republican's going to put up to take down the most accomplished first-term president (you may not like what he's done, but you can't deny you'd have to go back at least to FDR to find a president that actually passed as much significant legislation as Obama. If he doesn't do a single thing else, he will have accomplished more legislatively than any other modern presidency) in modern history?

Palin? Mittster? DeMint(ed)?

I certainly think Republican's discount Obama's chances at their own peril. But you know what, if he's only a one-termer, so be it. I would rather have a one-termer that actually did something over one who got re-elected and did nothing. Politics isn't about winning or keeping power, it's about using it.

David Frum said it best: Legislative majorities come and go. This healthcare bill is forever. A win in November is very poor compensation for this debacle now. … No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many votes could we muster to re-open the "doughnut hole" and charge seniors more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents' insurance coverage?"

If the books were closed on the Obama presidency today, they would include Health Care reform, financial regulation, student loan reform and host of smaller issue bills the Dems managed to pass in their two years before losing their majority. Not to mention, the stimulus and what right now appears to be single-handedly being able to claim they saved the American Auto industry.

That is an impressive line-up. Sure, a Republican majority can try to chip away at some of those achievements, but that's all they can do.

And let's not forget reality. Unemployment is up, but companies are sitting on cash reserves and profitable. They have, in essence, being trying to wait out this President. That ain't gonna last. They are going to have to start spending some of that money to help their buddies in the GOP and when that happens and the unemployment rate starts dropping, then what? They are going to be running against a President who kept us from financial collapse while delivering on the most significant domestic policy promise of the last century. (And don't believe the hype about people being against the AHCA. Polls show it Americans split on it. In two years, with an improved economy and more stories of people benefitting from provisions of the act, that split will move to a majority in favor).

But the main thing is, for President, I think you gotta have something for people to vote for, not against. I have yet to see that from the GOP.

Thank You, Fan - whoever you are. Not sure I know anyone in New Jersey, but good luck with the condo... Maybe it was Bruce or Jon.

Be nice Mike. P-Luv reminds me of a friend of mine at the lake. He just wants to be different he really does not mean what he says. The history book teaches us that Obama will probably be reelected due to him losing the congress.

Thank you , Mr. Congressman.. Anon 605, you are absolutely right: I Have Nothing... Just my gut feeling that the Pork Barrel has some maggots in it. Still, it is funny to see people squirm over things I say sometimes. if I'm wrong , they shouldn't worry, should they? ;)
