And the Smackdown Comes Right Back at Newt Gingrich ...

The Former Speaker Points Out the Only Area That He Won...

We were going to to say 'bitchslap' instead of 'smackdown', but we didn't want to offend anyone. Not that any Gingrich supporters will be happy with either, but that's the way it was.. After a couple days of looking like it may be close one, Mitt Romney pounded Newt Gingrich just as bad as the former Speaker did to him last week, but in a much more important state.  As much as we like to say that South Carolina picks presidents, it looks like that streak may be well on it's way to ending this year...

Yeah, it's early, but Romney is clearly in the drivers seat.  The winner take all Sunshine state gave Romney an 84-27 electoral vote edge, with caucuses in some pretty solid areas for him coming up.  Newt Gingrich can't wait for the Deep South primaries in April and May to get here fast enough, but he may be dead politcally by then.  There were stats that pointed to good news for Romney, and bad news for Gingrich.  After getting his ass kicked by Tea Party supporters and Evangelicals in the Palmetto State, Romney actually beat Gingrich with TP supporters, and lost by only a few pts with Christians...

Gingrich's big problem?  Women.  Big Time..  Romney wiped the floor with Newt as far as the ladies go, to the tune of 51-29.  This is not a subgroup, like Cuban Single Female Doctors above $150,000 and below 35 years old... This was ALL women.  It took a week, but Newt's got a problem with the ladies - even worse than me!  You run on your record, and his past is catching up with him, no matter how much Callista says he's changed..

What also hasn't changed is Gingrich's hubris... I'm not sure I've seen a stranger concession speech (if that's what it was) in my life.  You get your ass handed to you, so what do you do? You don't congratulate the winner, you don't say what you did wrong or how you'll fix it.  Instead, you send your supporters of to Fantasyland, describing what you're going to do in the first 2 hours on Inauguration Day???  Wrong time, wrong place, wrong message...

An interesting comment was made while I watched last night.  With the writing being pretty much on the wall, will Newt Gingrich try to take Mitt Romney out with him, or will he take the higher road, and go back to being the Wise Father of the party?  One of them said, "For someone who makes all his money consulting and giving motivational speeches to party members, he better!'  True enough... Lots of things are never forgotten when someone does what's worst for the party in a campaign.  What he does remains to be seen...

Not til Super Tuesday can you offer that the South has sold its soul to Mitt. Newt carried upper Florida, the part not inhabited by carpetbaggers and snowbirds...

Trump's expected endorsement probably won't mean much for Newt, but it does confirm to me that some folks recognize that Mitt has some hinkey economic ideas, like inflation driving automatic federal minimum wage increases...

OTOH, Mikey, you're an econ major, should inflation drive up a factor that causes inflation to increase? I thought we got past endless loops with IBM 29 card punch machines, but...

You misread me there, WR. Gingrich will absolutely win the Deep South, but he will likely be down by hundreds and hundreds of delegates by the time they get there.

With the minimum wage, I don't think it raises inflation as much as it raises unemployment. Small businesses that have people at that wage have a budget. If the wage goes up, rather than raise prices, they usually will either cut hours for those people, or outright cut a job. For the guy who doesn't get fired, it's a good thing - he/she makes more money. But for the guy next to him, he has nothing, because he just lost his job..

To wit, the Big Mac or Whopper or chicken dinner at the drive through doesn't gain any more value for a rise in the minimum wage, nor does the $10,000 coffee maker for Air Force One or the space shuttle o-rings. The increased cost of labor, will however be reflected in their prices.

Most businesses have budgets, and they will stick to it no matter what it takes. So rather than raise prices, and throw the budget off, the stick to the budget by laying off a guy or two, or cutting their hours.
