SC6 Remembers Levon Helm ...

Legendary Member of The Band Passes Away at 71....

And the bad news continues... Today, we got the news that drummer, singer and mandolin player of the classic rock group, The Band, passed away after a lengthy battle with throat cancer.  He was 71..  You might think we never heard of the group, but in the extremely early days of HBO in the 70's, they played their classic farewell show documentary, 'The Last Waltz'...

Levon Helm was the heart and soul of the group, and for some of you, you know him elsewhere.. Ever see 'Coal Miner's Daughter'?  Yeah?  Well, Levon Helm played Loretta Lynn's father in the film.  I don't think he ever acted before that, but he played that in an unbelievably understated way.  Too many people playing Southern go all crazy over the top, but Helm was Southern, so he knew how to do it.  Great job in that film..

Even though The Band broke up 40 years ago, he played until the very end. In tribute, we're playing my favorite track, 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'.  Rest in Peace, Levon...
