Dammit, We're Getting Older ...

When Three Of Your Favorite Bands From Your College Days Get Inducted Into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, It's a Sign You're Old..

Like a fine wine - my ass!  For those of you who know us well, you know that we have been fighting maturity and aging at every possible step since....well, forever.  Maybe we don't want to die young, but we're all for leaving a good-looking corpse!  Our goal?  To be in the casket, and have everyone say 'He Sure Doesn't Look His Age'.... Fernando Llamas, eat your heart out.

But, as the saying goes 'He who battles time has an adversary not subject to casualty'. I think it was Plato - or maybe George Burns.  Either way, the cold hard truth is that we ALL get older, and we have to live with it.  The 40's are tough, because you usually still look pretty good, but inside, you start to fall apart a bit - and you still think you can do everything you could do in your 20's - that is, until you actually TRY it...

Nuch as we try to ignore it, things pop up that slap reality in your face.  Music plays a lot in that role... Like this week, when we found out that The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, and Guns 'N Roses were all named as inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.  The HOF first opened when I was a freshman in college.  The inductees were familiar, but we never heard them in their heydays: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, James Brown, etc.  It was our parents Hall of Fame.  I remember when all three of the inductees this year came out.  RHCP's 'Higher Ground' has always been a favorite, the Beasties made me laugh my ass off, and Guns flat out changed Rock Music - at least for a couple of years.  Now, they're in MY Hall, and I have to explain each to kids today...

It happens.  In High School and College, MTV was OUR channel, then somewhere along the line, we got pushed over to VH1, which was heresy.  Then on the radio, your music suddenly gets pushed back to the Classic Rewind lunch hour, and eventually to VH1 Classic and obscure channels on Sirius and XM.. Eventually, it comes around, sort of... Your bands get elected to the HOF, but you end up reminiscing about it to your kids and eventually grandkids about how great they were - and you bore the shit out of them in the process.

Yes, aging is sad.  Few do it gracefully... There are far worse signs of getting older than your favorite bands going to the Hall of Fame, but sometimes it the little ones that remind you the most.  Til then, we're gonna throw on our skinny jeans and hit the clubs...
