Stealing to Pay the Mortgage... 42 Cents at a Time

Hey, I Couldn't Use Another Another Picture of Newman Again...
Being broke makes you do some really crazy things - like eating Ramen Noodles six days a week.... But for some of us, it turns us into criminals when opportunity presents itself.
We all know how much it sucks in Detroit, Michigan. We've documented it pretty thoroughly here, probably because it may be the one place that makes South Carolina feel better about itself. Unemployment, massive forclosures, and an economy going nowhere but South... Well, a mailman there found a way to make some extra cash from his job. Not a legal way, of course...
It seems that he would take the stamps being mailed to businesses on his route, keep them, and sell them on Ebay at a 15% discount. How much did he take? About $20k worth.... Of course, when the stores start complaining that the stamps aren't showing up, and they're all on the same guy's route, the gig eventually ends. And it did...
Why did he do it? Because he was falling behind on his mortgage. Nope, we won't excuse his actions, but it's a bit of a shame to see people go and do stupid things like this...

Reminds me of when a former House Ways and Means Chair from Chicago went to prison for converting postage stamps into cash.

While it wasn't too surprising to see a veteran Chicago pol going to prison, the amazing thing was that his constituents actually voted him out of office (but he still got 46%) while he was under indictment.

That was probably the first and last time a crooked politician wasn't warmly embraced by Chicago voters.
