Picture of the Day

Dargan Street , South of Evans ....

Today is the first of a series of pictures that we're going to show on Downtown Florence. Many of the smaller towns have revitalized their downtown areas, such as Marion and Manning, and it allows many local merchants to make a living. For a town the size of Florence, we are lagging way behind.

The library was a great start, and the Florence Little Theatre will be a boost as well, but the driving force behind a permanent rebirth will be business - the reason to go downtown everyday. There really isn't a whole lot to making the area more attractive - the streets are already bricked, and trees line Dargan and Evans Streets. However, the building exteriors are mismatched and ugly, and they need to bury the utilities that are all over the area. It's an eyesore. A little more parking would probably help.

The Downtown Redevelopment Corp. has been working on this for five years now. While some major projects have started, that core 4 or 5 block area has remained stagnant. I think renovating the exteriors and canopies so that they match so that it's a nice place to take a walk and go window shopping is a start. It will give Florence what it severly lack - a personality..
