While most people know about how important the New Hampshire Primary is, at midnight tonight, one small town in particular will have special attention. Dixville Notch, nestled in the mountains of Northern New Hampshire, will have the eyes of all the media on it, as the whole town comes out to vote, and give the first results - like it does every four years....
Since 1960, all 26 registered voters - half of whom are Republican, the other half independent - gather at The Balsams Hotel in the small town, which is only 15 miles from the Canadian border. At the stroke of midnight, a specially selected voter sticks his/her ballot in the box, followed by the others, and the results are then given. Then the town falls back into obscurity for another 4 years......
Before you put too much credence into the support of Dixville Notch, let us tell you how 2004 went. The winner of the Democratic Primary was Wesley Clark - mainly because Clark was the only candidate to visit Dixville Notch. None of the candidates visited in 2008. So, maybe we won't anxiously await the results from The Notch, it is one of the interesting little stories of the election season....
