Indonesia is a strange country.... There are a lot Islamic militants, but they also believe in sorcery and magical powers. It's almost like a mix of Osama Bin-Laden and Harry Potter. Unfortunately, it's an odd mix that causes the deaths of a lot of women.
Ahmad Suradji was one of those guys. In his town of Lubukpakan, he was thought to have special powers, and I guess he believed it all too. Local women would come to him to keep their husbands faithful, find a man or get rich. Suradji would take them to a remote field, bury them up to their waists, then strangle them and dispose of them, with their heads pointed towards his house. He did it 42 times before being arrested....
Suradji was arrested back in 1997, and he was finally executed by firing squad with the only objectors being Amnesty International. Indonesia is one of the most dangerous places in out worldwide battle against Islamic radicalism. With such widespread belief in goofy things like sorcery and magic, it makes it very hard to expect the people of Indonesia to will their leaders to be sensible....
